Department

The Computer Studies Department has one full-time member of staff, Mr Ian King, Principal Teacher. A number of other staff assist with the teaching of this subject. Accommodation comprises two rooms each equipped with 20 computers and a digital projector.
In S1, an IT course is offered to all pupils for 2 periods per week. In S3 and S4, Standard Grade Computer Studies is offered for 4 periods per week and an IT core skills course is offered to all Third Year pupils for 1 period a week. In S4 a Multimedia course is offered as an extra option to some pupils. In Fifth and Sixth Year Higher Still courses are offered at Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
The
role of the Computing Department is to provide resources and
training in Information Communications Technology for every member
of the school community, and to offer a wide variety of courses
for those who want to specialise in the study of computers, computer
systems and their effects on society.
As well as the practical skills needed to be able to use modern
Information Communications Technology, we encourage the development
of Problem Solving and Analysis, to enable students to have a
creative role in a modern technological society.
The department has a selection of hardware and software available
including a digital video camera with Pinnacle Studio video editing
software, Microsoft Front Page and Macromedia MX web authoring
software. We use Visual Basic and Java for our programming courses.
There is a small networking lab available for senior students.
Pupils are encouraged to create their own web pages and multimedia
presentations and to publish them on the school Intranet.
