S1/S2 Home Economics
Home Economics forms part of a common course; it contributes to
the technological (activities and applications) mode. In Kelso
High School the time allocation for pupils is 2 x 40 minute periods
per week in First and Second Year.
The Home Economics Department aims to provide a broad and balanced,
free standing learning experience for all pupils, laying a secure
foundation in life skills for those who will not take the subject
beyond Second Year.
This course does however lead progressively into either :
- Standard Grade Home Economics
- Intermediate 2 Fashion & Textiles
The First Year Experience
In First Year, Home Economics is a very
practical subject. Pupils are encouraged to learn doing rather
than watching. The whole
course is spent manufacturing a range of food and textile items
that are all sent home. Pupils cover a vast range of skills,
which are progressive into Second Year. Pupils
cover the following topics :
Basic cookery skills - weekly
practical cookery lesson
Design a Hat - pupils manufacture a fleece hat over a
series of lessons using computer-aided embroidery
Foods of the World - pupils cook from a range of countries
Bag - pupils manufacture a little bag to assess their skills
The Second Year Experience of Home Economics
In Second Year the
pupils manufacture a range of dishes, study Healthy Eating
and Manufacture Textile items.
Manufacture a cushion
Manufacture a denim pencil case
Study Healthy Eating - Practical Cookery
Understanding Ingredients - Practical Cookery
*Pupils are asked to contribute to the cost of this subject to
enable them to cover a very practical course. The money they pay
for their cookery subsidises their fabric work. The courses are
also subsidised by the school and the amount of money doesn't alter
regarding your age or stage in the curriculum. Parents may however
feel free to send their children with the ingredients if they do
not wish to pay. This would be expected weekly regardless if the
pupil is studying food or fabric and if the child is not equipped
they will not participate and be offered alternative written work.
Pupils cannot opt into certain lessons as the cost is worked out
annually

S3/S4 Home Economics
Home Economics divides into two separate routes, food or fabric.
You may opt to study one or both of these, depending on the aspects
of the First and Second Year course you particularly enjoyed!
Standard Grade Home Economics : "The Food Route"
"
Standard Grade Home Economics is a practically based course suitable
for both boys and girls of all levels and ability."
The two-year
course has been prepared to equip young people with life skills.
Through a variety of contexts, pupils are encouraged
to make reasoned decisions relating to them and other members
of society. Initially the course concentrates on aspects of
Home Economics that are of particular interest to young people,
the
relationship between nutrition, health and appearance; the
relationship between diet, exercise and performance.
As this course progresses pupils study aspects of Consumer Law,
educating them regarding their legal rights and "Scottish
Food Law" making this course very diverse. More than 50% of
the pupils' time in "Standard Grade Home Economics" is
spent learning in a practical situation, where the pupils are cooking
- providing an opportunity of light relief in what is often a very
stressful timetable !
Assessment
50% of your final Standard Grade mark
is practical cookery!
25% of your final grade is Knowledge and Understanding
25% of your final grade is Handling Information
