Happy Birthday Europe
March 2007 marks the 5oth anniversary of the European Union. Since its inception under the Treaty of Rome in 1957 it has seen its member countries soar from the original six to currently twenty seven with others still waiting in the wings to join.
There are probably 50+ reasons to celebrate the success of this institution ranging from the end of war between European countries to the introduction of cheap flights to Europe. The opening up of the European continent must be viewed as an opportunity for all for a variety of reasons. The Euro Skeptics can argue the merits of the single currency and the perceived loss of sovereignty but they cannot negate its longevity.
