In Britain, it was 1807 when the 'Abolition of the slave act' was passed. However this new law did not stop the slave trade in Britain. Captains who were caught continuing the slave trade were fined £100 per each slave found on board. Many, in danger of being caught by the Navy resorted to throwing slaves overboard. Many people still kept slaves. so in 1833 Parliament passed the 'slavery abolition act' giving slaves in the British Empire their freedom. Compensation was paid to the slave owners depending on how many slaves they had.

In America it was a much later date that slavery became illegal.

The world today still has slavery in it, from children being made to fight in some African countries to sex slaves, and many people are beginning to wonder when it will stop fully.
