Nuclear
Submarine
Yesterday two British sailors aboard the HMS Tireless were tragically killed during an exercise in the arctic after a chlorate candle exploded. The nuclear reactor was not damaged during the explosion because the reactor is nearer the back of the vessel and the explosion was at the front. The submarine was forced to surface 170 miles north of Alaska. The ministry of defence said that the force of the explosion killed one of the sailors instantly while the other died after inhaling poisonous fumes. These candles are only meant to be lit when there are dangerous amounts of Co2 in the air and were only lit yesterday as part of a training exercise. These candles have been known to explode before but the MoD couldnt believe that the force could have killed someone outright. These candles dont have an open flame, these candles line the whole vessel and next to each candle is a pair of asbestos gloves and a bucket of water and if the candle is starting to flame or burn you put on the asbestos gloves and put the candle in the bucket of water. In 2003 the HMS Tireless got minor damage to its ballast tank after it collided with a submerged object. The HMS Tireless had a hundred percent safety record until this incident. The submarine is now totally frozen into the ice.
